Picking up Chennedy Carter looked like a coup for the Las Vegas Aces early in the WNBA season. Now her tenure in Vegas is over, in a way similar to how her last few stints ended.
The Aces bid Carter farewell on Wednesday, waiving her after 13 games played despite a start to the season that had her looking like a Sixth Player of the Year contender. Speaking Thursday, Aces head coach Becky Hammon bluntly declined comment on Carter’s exit.
“We’re not going to comment on players that aren’t here anymore,” Hammon said, after an Aces staffer requested the reporters “keep it to basketball tonight” in response to a question about Carter.
It’s unclear what, if anything, happened in the Aces locker room, but all indications are Carter, who signed with Vegas in April, is leaving another team on terms similarly tense to her exits from the Chicago Sky and Los Angeles Sparks, which left her playing overseas in both 2023 and 2025.
The 2024 season saw Carter received Most Improved Player votes after averaging 17.5 points per game (a season that also saw her attain Caitlin Clark-related infamy). The Sky still declined to extend her a qualifying offer and her next game was the 2026 Aces season opener.
Carter got off to a hot start and then some with her new team, averaging 19.1 points on 64.6% shooting. She’s posted only 4.2 points per game in the six games she’s played since.

In between all of that, Carter was defending her defensive effort on social media, via Callie Fin of USA Today. Fin also reports the Aces waived her shortly before the deadline that would have required them to pay Carter’s non-guaranteed contract in full.
Carter’s struggles didn’t hurt the Aces too badly, though, as they are 15-6 entering Thursday night and hold the second-best record in the WNBA.
