Shealyn Scott is a Senior Writer at Screen Rant. She has been writing for the site since 2024, focused on network, reality, streaming, and classic television.
A creative writer, journalist, and lover of the written word in all its forms, Shealyn enjoys deconstructing scenes from her favorite shows, using context clues and historical precedent to predict major plot points (which, due to her successful track record, has sparked rumors of clairvoyance).
As an award-winning student journalist, Shealyn spent her college years advocating for the humanities while studying English Literature. Her love of storytelling propelled her to expand her degree with minors in Writing and History, believing life to be a mere collection of stories that can be framed in as many ways as a movie scene.
As a Senior member of the TV Team, Shealyn treats the series she covers like books, analyzing every line, camera angle, and lighting choice. Thankfully, her personal mission statement lines up perfectly with Screen Rant: every creative work deserves just as much thought from the viewer as it received from its creator.
SPOILERS AHEAD for Scrubs season 2, episode 7.25 years after its series premiere, Scrubs has ended an original duo’s relationship— permanently. Though the medical comedy’s initial run came to an end in 2010, ABC revived Scrubs in 2026, overriding the happy ever-afters the ensemble cast earned in the original series finale. With a new look, new generation of interns to follow, and new Chief of Medicine at the helm of Sacred Heart Hospital, the Scrubs reboot came out swinging with enough changes to give longtime viewers whiplash. Fortunately, the core players remain the same, even if their dynamics have become drastically different in the sitcom’s new era.
Scrubs season 2 has worked through the brunt of awkward tension following John “J.D.” Dorian (Zach Braff) and Elliot Reid’s (Sarah Chalke) divorce, while the problems in Chris Turk (Donald Faison) and Carla Espinosa’s (Judy Reyes) marriage have seemingly only amped up in the newest batch of episodes. Of course, romance has always been a key source of conflict both in the original and the revival, leading to numerous Scrubs characters exiting the show. Yet, the ABC revival just shut the door on arguably the longest-running storyline in Scrubs history: J.D. and Elliot’s on-again/off-again love story.
JD & Elliot’s Romance Is Over For Good In The Scrubs Revival

Since Scrubs began, J.D. and Elliot’s relationship has been a foil to Turk and Carla’s. Whereas the latter had a relatively quiet, established romance, the former were tumultuous and driven by passion, for better and for worse. Their unseen divorce between Scrubs season 10 and season 1 of the reboot should have been enough to close that chapter once and for all, but the revival instead left the possibility for one more will-they/won’t-they arc. Thankfully, the residual tension comes to a head in Scrubs season 2, episode 7, when a dream sequence reveals J.D. still loves Elliot.
Rather than revert to immature old habits, however, Scrubs demonstrates the growth J.D. has undergone by having him realize a harsh but fair epiphany: in the end, it’s healthier for him to ignore his lingering feelings than risk hurting Elliot— and, in the process, potentially hurting his son. Finally, Scrubs has essentially cut off any future romance between J.D. and Elliot, as backtracking on the protagonist’s decision in season 2, episode 7 would mean retconning his character development and jeopardizing their entire family unit.
Of course, Elliot’s feelings— or lack thereof— for J.D. remain unclear, but the reboot has taken a definitive stance against stoking the old flame. Sadly, Sean (Scott Foley) recently left Elliot heartbroken and single once again, but the arrival of Stephanie Koenig’s Cassie Simmons in Scrubs season 2 has laid the foundation for J.D.’s next great love story. Whether it ends in flames or a successful workplace romance, however, any relationship will surely be better than J.D. falling back on Elliot like a safety net.

Credit: ABCLuckily, there’s more than enough relationship drama to delve into in the Scrubs reboot. Although Turk and Carla aren’t in danger of an imminent divorce, their miscommunication and miscellaneous marital issues have been exacerbated in season 2. Meanwhile, surgical intern Amara Hadi (Layla Mohammadi) is unknowingly in a love triangle, with both boyfriend Blake Lewis (David Gridley) and secret admirer Grant Summers (John Higgins) vying for her attention. Ironically, Grant has far more natural chemistry with Samantha “Sam” Tosh (Ava Bunn), the star intern who has her own rocky relationship with coworker Asher Green (Jacob Dudman).
In practically every modern medical show, interns are the heart of HR nightmares/love stories, but Grant has a more convoluted role to play as Chief Resident and J.D.’s mentee in the Scrubs reboot. Considering his position of power, Grant is unable to ethically act on his romantic whims. Nevertheless, should the Scrubs revival earn a third season, the new cast will complete their intern year and enter full-fledged residency, making romantic pairings a free-for-all. Without question, the pure chaos that could unfold would be far more entertaining than watching Elliot and J.D. repeat history yet again.
