Abate replaces D’Aversa as Torino head coach

Torino have announced the exit of head coach Roberto D’Aversa, with Ignazio Abate named as his immediate replacement.

D’Aversa was only appointed on February 23, following the dismissal of Marco Baroni, and led Torino to a 12th-place finish after a 2-2 draw with derby rivals Juventus on the final day in Serie A.

However, there will be a change in head coach for the new season, with Abate signing a two-year deal through to June 2028.

D’Aversa did not lose any of his first six home games (W4 D2) as Torino boss in the Italian top flight.

In the three-point-for-a-win era, only two coaches had achieved that feat: Sinisa Mihajlovic in 2016-17 and Nedo Sonetti in 1994-95.

D’Aversa won five of his 12 matches (D3 L4), averaging 1.5 points per game in Serie A.

Former defender Abate is now returning to the club. He played for the club in the 2008-09 season, playing 25 games and scoring one goal before his season was cut short through injury.

This will be his first head coach job in Serie A, having previously been at AC Milan’s academy before joining Serie C club Ternana.

Abate led Juve Stabia to a seventh-place finish in the second tier last term, but they were knocked out in the play-off semi-final by Monza after a 4-3 aggregate defeat.
