Aaron Rodgers breaks down secret dynamic with Mike McCarthy

When first-year head coaches inherit veteran quarterbacks, the installation process usually requires months of painstaking translation. For new Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy and quarterback Aaron Rodgers, however, reunited in Pittsburgh for the 2026 season, that learning curve was eliminated on day one.

Appearing on fellow teammate Cameron Heyward’s podcast, “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward,” Rodgers explained how nearly 13 seasons together in Green Bay forged a shared offensive dialect that bypasses traditional installation. Because both men evaluate defensive fronts, protections, and coverage shells using the exact same terminology, the Steelers‘ offense operates without the typical friction of a new coaching staff.

“Well, I think that the best part is that we speak the same language,” Rodgers said. “And that might not seem like much, but when you have the training and you learn like offense a certain way and protection a certain way and defense alignment and identification certain way, you can really speak the language really well.”

This shared shorthand allows McCarthy and Rodgers to instantly access two decades of historical context and situational adjustments. Rather than building concepts from scratch, they pull proven plays directly from their mental archive during practice reps and sideline adjustments.

“So we already kind of speak the same language and then it’s the recall,” Rodgers noted. “So we can go, ‘Hey, remember we did this in 2009 in Arizona in the playoffs, we ran this play,’ like, ‘Hey, maybe we’ll bring back this type of concept.’ Or, ‘Hey, remember in ’16 when we went on that run late in the season. What do you think about this concept?’ Him and I just have so many years of like film to remember and plays and success that it’s really cool to be able to have that in the rolodex.”

By eliminating translation barriers, McCarthy and Rodgers give the Steelers an immediate tactical advantage, unlocking instant execution when other teams are still learning the words.
