With all of Europe’s elite domestic leagues officially drawing a line under the 2025/26 campaign last weekend, attention now falls on North America.

With just a matter of days until the 2026 World Cup gets underway on June 11th when Mexico welcome South Africa to the Estadio Banorte, we are treated to an expanded competition of 48 teams.

Watching all of this summer’s finalists officially announce their travelling squads, many are expecting some real European dominance in North America.

With all eyes now fully fixed on the 2026 World Cup, we have taken a glance at who the bookmakers have installed as their pre-tournament favourites.

Spain – 5/1

Suffering an infamous Round of 16 exit at the hands of eventual semi-finalists Morocco over in Qatar four years ago, Spain faced a public backlash when they returned to home soil.

However, despite getting the 2024 European Championships underway with a huge amount of pressure on their shoulders, La Roja made an almighty statement and reestablished themselves as one of world football’s ultimate poster boys.

Handing England more almighty major tournament heartbreak on the grandest of stages in Berlin, Luis de la Fuente‘s squad won all of their seven EURO 24 appearances and they have not suffered a single defeat across any front in over 26 months.

Likewise, breezing their way to North America and not having to get out of third gear, Spain registered 16 points in their six World Cup qualifying appearances and the European heavyweights also notched 21 goals.

Handed a further boost with it confirmed that 18-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal will be fit and firing ahead of their Group H opener against Cape Verde on June 15th, de la Fuente’s men are almost universally regarded as the standout contender to get their hands on just a second World Cup trophy this summer.

Missing out on the chance to successfully defend their World Cup crown over in the Middle East four years ago as they eventually fell to a remarkable penalty shootout defeat against Argentina, many were expecting that Didier Deschamps would be removed from his position before Les Bleus touched down back in Paris.

However, with the FFF making it clear that they would stick with the 57-year-old, many are pondering over just what type of France side will arrive in North America this summer.

Arriving next month with arguably one of the most powerful squads in World Cup history, Les Blues have certainly gained a real reputation for their action-packed affairs and they have attracted plenty of pre-tournament attention.

Set to be spearheaded by Real Madrid marksman and attacking poster boy Kylian Mbappe, France registered 16 points from their six qualifying appearances and they averaged almost three goals in each Group D showdowns.

Set to officially get their charge for a third World Cup crown underway next month when they meet Senegal on June 16th, Deschamps’ superstar squad are unsurprisingly being billed as a standout contender this summer.

Eventually falling to a 2-1 loss at the hands of Spain two years ago and suffering consecutive European Championship final defeats, that infamous heartbreak in Berlin was the end of the road for Gareth Southgate.

Now under the guidance of Thomas Tuchel, the Three Lions arrive in North America this summer firmly under the microscope and the pressure to get their hands on a first piece of international silverware since way back in 1966 will start to intensify.

While talismanic skipper Harry Kane might have enjoyed a record-breaking campaign with German giants Bayern Munich and finds himself regarded as a genuine Ballon d’Or contender, Tuchel’s squad announcement last week raised plenty of eyebrows.

Despite winning all of their eight World Cup qualifying appearances by an aggregate score of 22-0, it is fair to say that England have failed to make a major statement ahead of their trip to North America.

Last seen getting hit with a concerning 1-0 loss at home against Japan on March 31st, Tuchel’s pre-tournament decisions have certainly intensified the pressure on his shoulders.
