A.J. Brown has just joined the Patriots’ community after being traded to the New England Patriots. In a blockbuster move, the Philadelphia Eagles traded their star WR to the Patriots, exchanging multiple draft picks in the deal.

A.J. Brown was captured at a basketball event where he expressed his excitement to join the Patriots and his determination, saying he is “ready to ball.”

A.J. Brown Seeks Fresh Start as Patriots Alpha WR1

A.J. Brown was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles by the Tennessee Titans in 2022. After having him for four seasons, the Eagles finally let Brown go due to his own request and to fix their financial structure by moving on from a high-salary heavyweight.

In this blockbuster trade, the Patriots received the star WR A.J. Brown while the Eagles snatched the first-round pick in 2028 and the fifth-round pick in 2027. The trade benefitted both parties because the Patriots were looking for a proven WR to link up with Drake Maye, while the Eagles received multiple draft picks and got to fix their financial structure by letting Brown go.

It also worked in Brown’s favor because he wanted to start fresh somewhere else. Before the season began, he was enjoying his offseason at a casual basketball event where he expressed his excitement to join the Patriots. “It’s amazing, bro. I’m so excited, bro! I’m just ready to ball,” Brown said.

At the event he also talked about Kyle Williams and voiced praises for his new teammate. “K Dub is cold, bro. K Dub cold,” Brown said. Kyle Williams is heading into his 2nd year with the New England Patriots. Brown’s addition is a great opportunity for Williams to learn from him and build a mentor-mentee bond with the proven wide receiver.

The New England Patriots were looking for an alpha WR for Drake Maye, a highly reliable, physical target especially under pressure. They were also highly interested in reuniting A.J. Brown with his former coach Mike Vrabel. Everything eventually worked out great for everyone, but the Eagles were also waiting for just the right time to make the trade and lift off the “dead cap.”

The Eagles Waited Till June to Ease Off the Dead Cap

Dead cap, or dead money, is the money spent on the cap of a player who is no longer on the roster. NFL teams have to pay the remaining prorated portions against their cap even after the player is gone.

By trading Brown after June 1, the Eagles allowed themselves to split that money across two years. NFL rules allow teams to split the cap hit over two years if a trade is made after June 1. So instead of paying the full $43.45 million in 2026, they will only pay $16.3 million in dead cap this year and the remaining $27.1 million in 2027.

This was a smart move by the Eagles because it prevents them from spending a huge amount on dead cap and frees up more financial flexibility to sign or extend other players. It also saved them from carrying the remainder of Brown’s contract, which was quite suffocating and limiting their focus on other projects.

In the long run, this trade is beneficial to everybody. It’s what Brown wanted, it’s financially beneficial to the Eagles, and it fulfills the Patriots’ desire to have a dynamic alpha WR alongside Drake Maye.
