Every young player in the league has their “Welcome to the NBA” moment. It’s a moment when they realize that this isn’t college anymore and they are playing against the best of the best.
Philadelphia 76ers guard VJ Edgecombe didn’t have many of those moments as he had a terrific rookie season in the league. He averaged 16.0 points and was named to the All-Rookie First Team as he played with a ton of poise in his maiden season in the league.
With that being said, he did experience one moment. He opened up to HoopsHype on what his “Welcome to the NBA” moment:
When I was a primary defender for Ja Morant, he had 40… Yeah, I say that, I saw like that move of James Harden. You’d be like, ‘Man, I won’t foul him. If he does that, I won’t foul him.’ I fell for that, like he put my hand right in the cookie jar. So yeah, just stuff like that. You got me. I told my teammates before the game, I’m like, ‘I won’t get caught with that.’ Go right there. Beep. Foul.

Of course, that same game in which Morant scored 40 points, Edgecombe drilled the go-ahead 3-pointer in overtime to lift the Sixers to a win in late December. With that being said, these moments in the league are going to make Edgecombe better as he continues on in what should be a long and successful NBA career.
