Just to make some NBA fans feel older than they think they are, Jameer Nelson Jr., the son of the former NBA guard who was most famous for his time with the Dwight Howard-led Orlando Magic, is now in the NBA as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers‘ training camp roster as an Exhibit 10 player.
Nelson, who spent the past two seasons in the G-League, is making his case for a spot on the 76ers’ NBA roster by showing out in preseason. He had the opportunity to impress during their Monday night clash against the New York Knicks considering that Philly’s key pieces, such as Tyrese Maxey, LeBron James, and Joel Embiid, did not suit up, and he wasted no time in doing so.
With his father in attendance, Nelson recorded seven points, two rebounds, two blocks, and one steal in 15 minutes of play during the 76ers’ 120-97 win over the Knicks.

Now 25 years of age, the son of the former Magic guard averaged nearly 19 points per contest in 25 G-League games last season with the Stockton Kings, the Sacramento Kings’ affiliate team. He also shot 48 percent from the field and 38 percent from three, and he averaged that many points despite averaging just 25 minutes per contest, making him a microwave scorer. However, he hasn’t yet received an NBA call-up.
The 76ers already have two two-way players under contract, and both of them are guards (Rayan Rupert and Caleb Love), so that complicates Nelson’s chances of perhaps landing a two-way deal of his own.
Nelson’s father had him when he was only 19, which was three full years before he made his debut for the Magic as a 22-year-old rookie in 2004.
The elder Nelson spent the first 10 seasons of his career in Orlando, and he played a crucial role in establishing the Magic as a contender in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Now, he’s rooting for his son to make it to the NBA in an official capacity, and this preseason is junior’s opportunity to show teams that he can contribute against a higher level of competition.
