5-star small forward Asa Montgomery commits to Duke

Duke added a massive piece to its 2027 recruiting class on Wednesday as 5-star Asa Montgomery announced his commitment to the Blue Devils.

From Hillgrove HS (Powder Springs, Ga.), the No. 3 small forward and No. 8 overall player in his class chose Jon Scheyer and Duke over a loaded field of candidates, including North Carolina, UConn, Georgia Tech and LSU.

At 6-foot-7 and 215 pounds, Montgomery can play multiple roles, according to 247Sports’ Adam Finklestein:

“We saw Montgomery in two very different contexts this summer. In the EYCL, he was a volume scorer with the ultimate green light. Everything went through him and he put up a whopping 27.9 points on 54/34/76 shooting along with 10.2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3.3 stocks (1.4 steals and 1.9 blocks) per game. With USA Basketball, though, he bought into being a role-playing four. He provided energy, offensive rebounding, cutting, defensive versatility, and playmaking within their full-court pressure, even though he was surprisingly reluctant to shoot at times.”

Montgomery took an official visit to Durham earlier this month, attending the annual Countdown to Craziness on Oct. 2. He joins 4-star Kager Knueppel and Luke Paul (Australia) as the current commits in the 2027 class.
