As we approach the largest track and field event in collegiate sports, it’s important to take a look back at some of the great track and field achievements in NCAA history.
Here’s five NCAA Track and Field Championships records to know ahead of June 10.
Christian Coleman sets the Men’s 100m Record at the 2017 Semifinals
Tennessee Volunteers’ track and field star Christian Coleman made headlines in 2017 when he set the new record for the men’s 100m, running a 9.82. The previous NCAA Division 1 record was 9.89
Coleman’s 9.82 improved his personal best by 0.13 seconds and at the time was the ninth-fastest in world history and fourth-fastest in American history.
His record hasn’t been touched for now, but sprinters are getting close.
On Wednesday, May 27, Auburn sprinter Kanyinsola Ajayi came close to Coleman’s record, running the 100m in 9.84 seconds during the East first round, and clocking the second-fastest time in Division 1 history.
Sha’Carri Richardson Smashes the Women’s 100m Collegiate Record in 2019
Years before Sha’Carri Richardson became an Olympic gold medalist and an international track superstar, she was a freshman at LSU setting collegiate records.
Richardson competed at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 100m, where she dominated the competition en-route to a 10.75 and a new NCAA record.
The former record was 10.78, set by LSU sprinter Dawn Sowell in 1989.
For reference, the top time for the women’s 100m at the East quarterfinals for the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships was 10.88, run by Georgia senior Jassani Carter.

Chris Nilsen Breaks Men’s Pole Vault Record Not Once, But Twice
Chris Nilsen is one of the greatest pole vaulters not just in South Dakota history, but NCAA history.
In 2018, he set the record for the highest pole vault for a winner at the NCAA Division 1 Track and Field Championships with a 5.83m jump.
At the 2019 NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Nilsen shattered his own record for the highest outdoor pole vault for a winner, with 5.95m. He also gave future world record holder Mondo Duplantis the only defeat of his collegiate career.
With two first-place finishes in four years, Nilsen cemented himself as one of the great pole vaulters in NCAA history.
Abby Steiner Sets the Record for the Women’s 200M
Kentucky sprinter Abby Steiner shattered the NCAA Outdoor Division 1 Track and Field Championship record in the 200m and became the new world leader in the 200m in 2022.
Steiner ran a 21.80, passing the previous record set by Kyra Jefferson in 2017. In addition to breaking the NCAA record and winning the National Championship, she received the track and field Honda Sports award.
She went on later that year to win gold at the 2022 World Championships at the 4 x 100m relay.
Henry Rono Sets the Men’s Steeplechase Record, Still Untouched Nearly 50 Years Later
Henry Rono is considered one of the greatest collegiate athletes, regardless of sport, in NCAA history.
During the 1978 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Season, he proved his greatness by breaking four world records in 81 days. At the Championships, he ran an 8:12.4, which remains the fastest steeplechase run during the Division 1 Championships.
Rono finished 12 seconds ahead of second place at the championships. His achievements are still talked about today at Washington State University.
