The hockey world is still reeling after a massive shockwave hit Detroit, with reports that Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin has requested a trade sending the franchise into chaos and speculation into overdrive.
As the fallout continues to build and questions swirl around the team’s direction, a Detroit legend has now stepped forward with a blunt warning aimed directly at Larkin.
The request reportedly came down after the Red Wings missed the postseason yet again, extending the franchise’s painful playoff drought to a staggering 10 straight seasons.
To make a tense situation worse, Larkin has used his full no-move clause (NMC) to submit an incredibly restrictive three-team trade wishlist: the Florida Panthers, Vegas Golden Knights, and Minnesota Wild.
Amid the growing speculation,Detroit Red Wings legend Darren McCarty weighed in on the situation, offering a blunt but reflective take on what it means for both the player and the organization.
“This, I believe, will end up being one of the best things to happen to the Red Wings organization. But it’s the whole thing about turning your back on your brothers, turning your back on everything else instead of going through it all together,” McCarty said.
“It comes down to personal choice, and he’s made his choice. But what he’s done is the analogy is he’s playing a poker tournament, and he just moved 10 big blinds all in against a guy who’s got 100 big blinds. You can’t win. But you’re getting called, and you’ve got to face it, and now the power’s not in your hand,” he warned.
McCarty’s message was clear: once a decision like this is made public, there’s no controlling how it plays out.
Larkin, who turns 30 in July, still has five years left on the 8-year, $69.6 million deal he signed in 2023, a contract originally seen as a long-term commitment to Detroit’s “Yzerplan.”
But multiple factors appear to have strained that relationship. One key moment reportedly came during the international stage, where Larkin’s experience winning Olympic gold with Team USA in Milan exposed him to a higher level of competition and may have shifted his perspective on Detroit’s timeline.
There’s also growing speculation about tension between Larkin and general manager Steve Yzerman. Some reports suggest frustration has built over the Red Wings’ relatively quiet trade deadline approaches in recent seasons, as well as a broader lack of aggressive moves to accelerate the rebuild.
Despite the drama, Larkin’s value around the league is still pretty high. He’s coming off a strong season with 34 goals and 67 points in 74 games, along with a 52.9% faceoff win rate, making him one of the top centers if he becomes available.
For Detroit, it raises tough questions about the direction of the rebuild. For Larkin, it marks a crossroads between loyalty and the pursuit of a clearer path to contention.
As McCarty’s warning suggests, once a situation like this becomes public, it’s hard to control where it ultimately goes.
