5 Best Pirates In Pirates Of The Caribbean, Ranked By How Good They Actually Are At Piracy

The best pirates in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise aren’t necessarily the ones with the biggest ships, the most intimidating reputations, or the flashiest sword-fighting skills. Being a successful pirate requires considerably more than looking good in a tricorn hat. A genuinely accomplished buccaneer needs to know how to command a crew, navigate dangerous waters, outsmart naval authorities, acquire valuable loot, and, perhaps most importantly, stay alive long enough to enjoy the spoils.

Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean features plenty of colorful characters who claim to be masters of the Seven Seas, but their actual records are considerably more complicated. Some are brilliant strategists who command terrifying supernatural forces, while others rely on their reputations and an extraordinary ability to escape situations that should have killed them several times over.

Judging these characters by their actual effectiveness as pirates produces some surprising results. A legendary captain might be spectacularly entertaining but hopelessly unreliable, while an unassuming member of a crew can prove far more valuable than his rank suggests. These five characters demonstrate very different approaches to piracy, but their ability to survive, command, plunder, and maintain their authority separates the genuinely accomplished from the merely famous.

Mr. Joshamee Gibbs

Not every great pirate in Pirates of the Caribbean needs to command a legendary ship or terrify entire fleets. Sometimes, the most valuable person aboard a pirate vessel is the one who actually knows what they’re doing. Joshamee Gibbs might not have Captain Jack Sparrow’s reputation, but Kevin McNally’s dependable first mate is one of the franchise’s most competent sailors.

Gibbs previously served in the Royal Navy, giving him valuable maritime experience before he joined the pirate trade. He’s particularly knowledgeable about navigation, pirate folklore, and the dangers of sailing the Caribbean. He’s also an experienced survivor, repeatedly helping Jack escape situations that would have finished considerably less capable sailors.

Gibbs’ knowledge proves especially useful when the crew needs to navigate supernatural threats, track down legendary treasures, or assemble the resources for another seemingly impossible expedition. Most importantly, Gibbs understands that a successful pirate captain needs a dependable crew. His loyalty to Jack is occasionally tested by his captain’s ridiculous decisions, but he consistently demonstrates good judgment and an ability to keep things running.

His biggest limitation is that he’s rarely the person making the grand strategic decisions. Gibbs is an excellent first mate rather than an exceptional captain. Nevertheless, the Black Pearl would be considerably less successful without him.

Captain Jack Sparrow

Jack Sparrow might be the most famous pirate in Pirates of the Caribbean, but his actual professional record is considerably less impressive than his reputation suggests. Johnny Depp’s wonderfully eccentric character is an extraordinary improviser, a persuasive liar, and an expert at escaping situations that should be impossible to survive. Unfortunately, keeping hold of anything he acquires is another matter entirely.

Jack’s greatest achievement is arguably the Black Pearl itself. He previously captained the legendary vessel before his first mate, Barbossa, organized a mutiny and abandoned him on an island. Although Jack eventually reclaimed his ship, he repeatedly lost control of it throughout the franchise. Davy Jones claimed the Pearl after Jack made a deal to escape death, while Blackbeard eventually trapped the vessel inside a bottle using supernatural powers.

His financial situation is similarly unreliable. Jack frequently finds himself without money, a functioning crew, or even a ship, forcing him to negotiate increasingly ridiculous arrangements to get back on the water. His attempts to secure the Fountain of Youth in On Stranger Tides also demonstrate how frequently his ambitions depend on somebody else’s resources.

However, Jack’s persuasive abilities are genuinely exceptional. He regularly manipulates enemies into fighting one another, escapes imprisonment through elaborate improvisation, and somehow survives encounters with considerably more dangerous opponents. He’s also an accomplished swordsman when circumstances demand it.

Jack is an outstanding opportunist, but a rather questionable business person. His ability to survive is legendary; his ability to maintain a successful pirate operation is considerably less convincing.

Davy Jones

Few pirates in Pirates of the Caribbean are as genuinely terrifying as Davy Jones. The supernatural captain of the Flying Dutchman possesses an enormous tactical advantage over practically every ordinary sailor in the Caribbean, combining maritime expertise with an almost unstoppable crew and the ability to summon the Kraken.

Jones is particularly effective because he understands how to exploit other people’s desperation. His agreements offer dying sailors the opportunity to escape death in exchange for a century of service aboard the Dutchman. This arrangement allows him to continually replenish his crew, creating an increasingly formidable force of supernatural sailors.

His control over the Kraken makes him even more dangerous. The enormous sea monster can destroy entire vessels on his command, giving Jones an exceptionally effective weapon against anyone who challenges his authority. His ship is also extraordinarily capable, allowing the Dutchman to pursue and engage enemy vessels with devastating efficiency.

Jones is no less dangerous personally. He’s an accomplished swordsman, physically formidable, and remarkably ruthless when dealing with enemies or disobedient crew members. His manipulation of Jack Sparrow demonstrates that he’s also capable of using psychological pressure rather than relying entirely on brute force.

However, Jones has one enormous weakness: his heart. Keeping it locked inside the Dead Man’s Chest gives his enemies a means of controlling him, and his eventual dependence on Lord Cutler Beckett exposes the limitations of his otherwise formidable operation. He’s an exceptionally effective pirate, but his inability to overcome his personal vulnerabilities ultimately costs him everything.

2

Captain Blackbeard

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/ian-mcshane-as-blackbeard-stranger-tides-pirates-of-the-caribbean.jpg?q=49&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=2" />

Ian McShane’s Blackbeard is arguably the most frightening traditional pirate in the entire Pirates of the Caribbean. Introduced in On Stranger Tides, Edward Teach has built a terrifying reputation through his ruthless treatment of enemies, supernatural abilities, and willingness to sacrifice practically anyone standing between him and his objectives.

His flagship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge, is particularly formidable. Blackbeard’s enchanted Sword of Triton allows him to control the ship’s rigging, animating its ropes and manipulating its movements to ensnare enemies. His crew is equally intimidating, consisting of zombie sailors who obey his commands without question. He can even use the ship’s fearsome flamethrower-like weaponry to incinerate opposing vessels.

Blackbeard also understands the psychological side of piracy. His reputation precedes him, and his enemies frequently find themselves intimidated before a confrontation even begins. His treatment of Jack demonstrates his ability to exploit other pirates’ weaknesses, using a voodoo doll to inflict pain and control his captive.

However, Blackbeard isn’t simply a supernatural bully. His expedition to the Fountain of Youth demonstrates considerable strategic planning, although his obsession with avoiding the death predicted by a prophecy ultimately compromises his judgment.

His biggest mistake is underestimating Barbossa. The former captain exploits Blackbeard’s obsession with survival, eventually defeating him and taking control of the Queen Anne’s Revenge. Blackbeard is an extraordinarily capable pirate, but his combination of arrogance and desperation prevents him from reaching the top spot.

1

Captain Hector Barbossa

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Hector-Barbossa-from-Pirates-of-the-Caribbean.jpg?q=49&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=2" />

Hector Barbossa is practically the complete pirate package. Geoffrey Rush’s magnificent character combines exceptional sailing experience, ruthless ambition, strategic intelligence, and an extraordinary ability to survive situations that would destroy practically anybody else. While Jack Sparrow has the reputation and Blackbeard has the supernatural weaponry, Barbossa consistently demonstrates that he’s capable of succeeding through his own considerable abilities.

His first major achievement is organizing the mutiny against Jack aboard the Black Pearl. Having served as first mate, Barbossa understood the ship, its crew, and its captain’s weaknesses. He exploited that knowledge to seize control, marooning Jack and establishing himself as one of the Caribbean’s most feared pirates. His subsequent pursuit of the Aztec gold shows his determination, even if the resulting curse leaves him and his crew unable to experience life’s pleasures.

Barbossa’s achievements extend well beyond the Black Pearl. He’s one of the nine Pirate Lords, represents the Caspian Sea at the Brethren Court, and eventually becomes Pirate King after Elizabeth Swann’s election. He’s also capable of adapting when circumstances demand it, even temporarily abandoning piracy to become a privateer in the Royal Navy.

His rivalry with Blackbeard further demonstrates his resourcefulness. Despite losing a leg and the Black Pearl, Barbossa survives, obtains command of the Queen Anne’s Revenge, and successfully avenges himself on his enemy. Perhaps most impressively, Barbossa understands that piracy requires more than individual brilliance.

Barbossa can command a crew, negotiate alliances, organize attacks, and recognize when an enemy needs to become an ally. He’s ruthless without being reckless and ambitious without being entirely dependent on luck. Jack Sparrow might be the Pirates of the Caribbean‘s most entertaining pirate, but Barbossa is undoubtedly its most accomplished.
