49ers bring back 2 players as others hit injured reserve

The San Francisco 49ers made a round of new roster moves Monday after finalizing their practice squad amid waiver wire transactions. The team re-signed safety Ashtyn Davis and punter Corliss Waitman to one-year deals while placing cornerback Nate Hobbs and linebacker Nick Martin on injured reserve, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

San Francisco initially released Waitman as part of its 53-man roster cuts, and now he returns as the 49ers’ punter for 2026. Davis’ return addresses a thinner safety room with Malik Mustapha working back from a hamstring injury and Ji’Ayir Brown and Marques Sigle the only healthy potential starters for Week 1. Davis, a vested veteran not subject to waivers, gives the room an experienced body who can also contribute on special teams.

The corresponding roster crunch explains the two injured reserve moves. Hobbs had made the initial 53 despite missing lots of training camp and the preseason with a groin injury. Martin, meanwhile, was among a linebacker group considered too deep to keep fully intact, with hamstring issues clouding his availability.

San Francisco is finalizing its roster before departing for Australia, where the team opens the season against the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday, Sept. 10.
