4 takeaways from Broncos' snap counts in Week 1

There was quite a bit to take away from the Denver Broncos‘ embarrassing loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night, and nearly all of it was negative.

The Broncos were outplayed and outworked in every phase of the game and Andy Reid and his coaching staff outperformed Sean Payton and his staff considerably. It leaves the Broncos at 0-1 with a nasty taste in their mouths heading back home to face the Jacksonville Jaguars next Sunday.

Looking at the team’s snap counts from this game, here are some interesting things we took away from them.

The Broncos never established much of a rushing attack in this game, so it was tough to get into a groove running the ball. J.K. Dobbins led the way with eight carries and RJ Harvey only had three.

But Jonah Coleman, whom the Broncos used a fourth-round pick on, saw only three offensive snaps and he didn’t touch the ball one time. This is something the team should focus on changing, particularly if it faces any short-yardage situations in Week 2.

This game got away from them, but you brought Coleman in to help grind out those tough yards, so leaving him dressed on the sideline with hardly any work should not become a habit.
not a big part of the offense

This may have had a lot to do with Marvin Mims sustaining an injury in this game, but he saw only nine snaps on offense while Courtland Sutton had 39, Jaylen Waddle had 38, Pat Bryant had 30 and Troy Franklin had 17.

It seems the Broncos clearly see Bryant as their No. 3 option, but Mims might still be the best deep threat on the roster and the team still just doesn’t use him for much other than being a return man on special teams.
gets a healthy dose of action

With 41 defensive snaps on Monday night, Eyioma Uwazurike appears to be the top player in line to replace the departed John Franklin-Myers. Only Zach Allen (42) had more.

D.J. Jones had 39 snaps and Malcolm Roach had 32, while second-year player Sai’vion Jones was given 15. Uwazurike finished the game with three tackles.
continues to stand and watch

Given just four defensive snaps on Monday night, the Broncos just don’t have last year’s first-round pick, Jahdae Barron, figured into their defensive plan.

Pat Surtain II and Riley Moss were each on the field for all 69 defensive snaps and Ja’Quan McMillian got 49. Barron only saw four.

Of course, the big question remains the same as it was last year. If Barron comes in, who comes out? This may be something the Broncos have to evaluate more closely, as they have talented players at this position, but they can’t help much when they’re not out there. Barron and/or McMillian could become a trade option at some point during this season.
