The second weekend of official visits is underway for the Oregon Ducks as Dan Lanning hopes to add to another elite recruiting class.
Unfortunately, he was not able to get one of Oregon’s favorite tight end recruits on campus this week and ultimately fell short in the recruitment. Four-star tight end ducks-set-183521597.html">Malik Howard announced his commitment on Saturday to the Tennessee Volunteers, opting to stay close to home over programs like Oregon, Notre Dame and Alabama.
Howard is currently on his official visit to Tennessee, and he saw everything he needed to in just one day before locking in his commitment. He also canceled an official visit to Alabama, signalling that the decision came down to Tennessee, Oregon and Notre Dame.
The Ducks offered Howard in April and got him on campus in May for an unofficial visit. However, he never made it back for an official visit. The No. 11 tight end and No. 225 overall-ranked player, per the Rivals Industry Ranking, is a big receiving target who could have helped five-star quarterback Will Mencl in Eugene.
While the Ducks would have enjoyed adding the 6-foot-5 tight end to their 2027 recruiting class, Oregon remains in a good situation at tight end. The Ducks landed Kendre Harrison, the top tight end in the 2026 recruiting cycle, and earned a transfer from Penn State‘s Andrew Olesh.
Oregon has not added a tight end in the 2027 class yet, but that could change this weekend. Three-star tight end George VanSandt is currently visiting the Ducks and could commit by the end of the weekend. The No. 2 player in Oregon recently decommitted from Arkansas after the Ducks offered and quickly scheduled a visit.
The Ducks have the No. 9 class in the nation, per Rivals, but could see a huge boost this weekend.
