30 Years Ago, Star Trek Did The Best Captain Kirk Crossover Ever

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine delivered the best-ever crossover with Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) to celebrate Star Trek‘s 30th anniversary. On November 4, 1996, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 5, episode 6, “Trials and Tribble-ations” premiered in syndication, and it was the gold-standard example of a then-current Star Trek show honoring the series that started it all.

The most famous Captain Kirk crossover is 1994’s Star Trek Generations, when he met Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). The two most famous Captains of the Starship Enterprise sharing the screen was a massive and historic event for Star Trek and pop culture. While Kirk and Picard, and Shatner and Stewart, shared a crackling chemistry, few fans would say that Star Trek Generations fulfilled the potential of the two captains sharing one destiny.

In the decades since Captain Kirk‘s canonical death in Star Trek Generations, other Star Trek series have tried and failed to entice William Shatner to play Kirk again. The most prominent attempts by Star Trek: Enterprise and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds would have been crossovers with those series’ captains, but with an asterisk: Shatner would have played an alternate reality version of Kirk and not the real (not Bones) McCoy.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Had Captain Kirk’s Best Crossover Ever

Without actually securing the services of William Shatner, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine pulled off an ingenious crossover. “Trials and Tribble-ations” recreated and seamlessly melded scenes from Star Trek: The Original Series‘ classic “The Trouble With Tribbles” to create something unforgettable, and topped it all off with Captain Kirk sharing face time with Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks).

What Star Trek: Deep Space Nine did was astounding. Through the tried-and-true gimmick of time travel, Sisko and DS9’s crew beamed aboard the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 and Space Station K-7. DS9‘s production team lovingly recreated the 1960s Star Trek sets and lighting, then used CGI wizardry to plant Deep Space Nine‘s actors in The Original Series‘ scenes. 30 years later, the VFX and illusion are perfect and utterly believable.

Part of the charming joke of “Trials and Tribble-ations” is that Captain Kirk never realized there were 24th century time travelers in his midst. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine went the extra mile by having Captain Sisko introduce himself to Captain Kirk, just as any Trekkie fanboy would. This was achieved by repurposing a scene from Star Trek: The Original Series’ “Mirror, Mirror” and digitally replacing Lt. Marlena Moreau (BarBara Luna) with Sisko. The switcheroo was flawless, and the moment was delightfully clever.

Captain Kirk’s 10 minutes of screen time with Captain Picard was the high point of Star Trek Generations, but given the magnitude of their crossover and sky-high expectations, the movie is overall a disappointment. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine had the benefit of surprise and surpassed the perceived limits of a syndicated Star Trek TV series in the mid-1990s. Most of all, “Trials and Tribble-ations” was just undeniably fun and a loving ode to Star Trek‘s legendary history.

Star Trek’s 30th Anniversary Was Much Better Than Its 60th

Star Trek‘s 60th anniversary celebrations in 2026 pale in comparison to how the franchise partied when Gene Roddenberry’s sci-fi creation turned 30 in 1996. The recent deaths of Patrick Stewart and Walter Koenig cast a pall on what was already an anniversary year peppered by disappointment and concern for Star Trek‘s future.

Star Trek Year 30 was topped off by Star Trek: First Contact, the best Star Trek: The Next Generation movie.

In 1996, Star Trek turned 30 with a TV special on UPN, Star Trek: 30 Years and Beyond. It was a gala event uniting actors from the existing Star Trek series, with celebrity tributes and performances. Star Trek: Voyager brought back George Takei in its season 2 episode, “Flashback,” and Deep Space Nine dazzled with “Trials and Tribble-ations”. Star Trek Year 30 was topped off by Star Trek: First Contact, the best Star Trek: The Next Generation movie.

Compared to 1996, every Trekker wants to use the Bajoran Orb of Time to go back 30 years. Star Trek‘s 60th anniversary began with the premiere and then cancellation two months later of the maligned Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 disappointed many fans. No new Star Trek series is in development as Skydance purchased Paramount and Warner Bros., creating valid concerns about Star Trek‘s future. And then we lost Walter and Sir Patrick.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine‘s “Trials and Tribble-ations” was a magnificent way to honor Captain Kirk for Star Trek‘s 30th anniversary. By going back to 2267, Sisko and DS9 restored Captain Kirk to the flower of his comically youthful swagger, blustering against Klingons and being buried by Tribbles. This was punctuated by the perpetual in-joke that Kirk never found out Sisko saved his life from an exploding Tribble.
