Twenty-five years after its Japanese debut, Digimon Tamers is receiving a high-definition home-video release that gives fans another reason to celebrate one of the franchise’s most acclaimed installments. Discotek Media is bringing the third Digimon television series to Blu-ray in both its English-dubbed and original Japanese versions, giving longtime viewers and newcomers new ways to revisit the 2001 anime.
The English-dubbed collection is already available, while the Japanese-language edition with English subtitles is scheduled for November 24, 2026 via MediaOCD. Both releases contain all 51 episodes, but their different language options offer distinct viewing experiences. For fans who grew up watching the English dub, the first set provides an upgraded presentation of a familiar favorite, while the upcoming subtitled collection finally brings the original Japanese version to home video with English subtitles.
Digimon Tamers Is Finally Getting the HD Release Fans Have Wanted
Discotek announced the English-language Blu-ray on June 1, 2026, confirming that the season would receive an HD upscale similar to the company’s previous Digimon television releases. Available through MediaOCD, the four-disc collection includes all 51 episodes in 1080p high definition, preserving the original 1.33:1, 4:3 aspect ratio. It also includes English closed captions.
The Japanese-language edition is scheduled to arrive on November 24, 2026, and is available to preorder through MediaOCD. Like the dubbed version, it includes four discs and all 51 episodes in high definition with the original aspect ratio intact. The set runs for 1,220 minutes and features Japanese audio with English subtitles, offering an alternative to the localized version many international fans know.
The two collections also differ in their runtimes and prices. The English-dubbed edition runs for 1,070 minutes and is currently listed for $63.99, while the Japanese-subtitled version runs for 1,220 minutes and is listed for $71.96 ahead of its November release. Both are Region A Blu-rays, making them compatible with appropriate players in North America. Most importantly, the subtitled edition offers a version of the series that has not previously received a Japanese-language home-video release with English subtitles.
Why Digimon Tamers Remains the Franchise’s Best
Unlike Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02, Tamers introduces an entirely new cast and begins in a world where Digimon are fictional characters and trading-card-game creatures. Takato Matsuda is an enthusiastic fan who designs Guilmon himself, only to discover that his creation has become real. This clever premise turns an ordinary childhood hobby into a responsibility with genuine consequences.
Takato must learn to become a capable Tamer alongside Jianliang, known as Henry in the English dub, and Ruki, localized as Rika. Their respective partners, Terriermon and Renamon, contribute different personalities and abilities to the group. The card-slash system adds another distinctive element, allowing the children to strengthen their Digimon through trading cards rather than relying exclusively on traditional battles.
As the story progresses, Digimon Tamers ventures into darker territory, with digital monsters appearing in the human world and the children becoming targets of government authorities and powerful forces connected to the Digital World. Grief, identity, responsibility, and sacrifice gradually become central to the narrative, giving its adventures emotional stakes that distinguish the season from its predecessors. Twenty-five years later, its willingness to experiment with the franchise’s familiar formula remains a major reason fans continue to rank it among Digimon’s finest installments.
