Thevice presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Rabi’u Kwankwaso, has expressed concern over the ‘infidel’ comment made by an Islamic cleric, Sheikh Sani Jingir.
In a post on his verified Facebook page on Monday, Kwankwaso said at the critical moment in the nation’s history, statements that promote division and disunity must be firmly discouraged.
DAILY POST reports that Jingir, in a video circulating on social media, warned that whoever does not want to accept a Muslim-Muslim ticket should leave Nigeria because the country belongs to Muslims, while also referring to Christians as ‘infidels.’
In his reaction, the former Kano State governor said it was particularly troubling to hear such rhetoric from a religious leader of Sheikh Jingir’s stature and influence.
Kwankwaso added that political and religious leaders alike carry a solemn responsibility to uphold truth, foster unity, and advance reconciliation
“I am deeply concerned by the comments made by Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir at an event in Kano this weekend.
“Let it be clearly stated: the good people of Kano do not endorse or support these divisive remarks.
“We must not lend our voices to utterances capable of undermining the very foundation of our nationhood.
“The 2027 general elections will be an opportunity for Nigerians to reward good governance with resounding support and to reject poor performance at the polls.
“This administration has earned the latter. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he tweeted.
