2027 election: Anglican Church sends message to Nigerians, politicians, INEC, FG

Ahead of the 2023 general election, the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, has appealed to all Nigerians, political leaders, and parties to prioritise national unity, peace, and collective welfare above partisan considerations.

The church issued this appeal during its 15th General Synod convened in Ogun State. 

It called upon political actors and citizens to condemn hate speech, violence, intimidation, vote-buying, and misinformation.

The Church emphasised that Nigerians and political actors must commit to issue-focused campaigns and peaceful engagement, while also encouraging citizens to fulfil their civic duties responsibly and respect legitimate electoral procedures and results.

The communique released following the five-day deliberation stated, “The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is urged to maintain neutrality, transparency, and credibility in conducting the elections, while the Judiciary is encouraged to preserve its integrity by exercising independent and impartial judgment in election-related matters.

“Political disagreements should never serve as justification for hatred, violence, or the erosion of national unity.”

The synod comprised 142 Bishops, 199 Clergy members, and 145 Laity representatives in its official rolls.

The General Synod additionally voiced apprehension regarding the persistent security challenges affecting the nation, including banditry, abductions, and fatalities across various regions.

While acknowledging the Federal Government’s recent accomplishments in liberating abducted individuals, particularly schoolchildren and educators in certain states, and commending the deployment of forest security personnel, the synod urged all governmental levels to intensify efforts in safeguarding citizens’ lives.

“Synod recommends enhanced intelligence operations, addressing ungoverned territories throughout the nation, and reclaiming areas controlled by terrorist organisations, thereby adopting a proactive rather than reactive approach to security challenges.”
