2026 Belmont Stakes purse: How big is Golden Tempo's cash prize?

Golden Tempo won the 2026 Belmont Stakes with a late surge in the Triple Crown race, held at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga, New York on Saturday, June 6.

The three-year-old horse now gets a fat stack of cash to take home after crossing the finish line first. This adds to his winnings after he took home the trophy at the Kentucky Derby.

Golden Tempo couldn’t capture the Triple Crown because he didn’t participate in the Preakness.

“We made our decision and he won today and we’re going to be happy about that,” trainer Cherie DeVaux, who became the first woman trainer to win the Kentucky Derby, said on the FOX broadcast after the race. She is also now the first woman trainer to win two Triple Crown races.

Commandment was second and Renegade, the 9-5 favorite, finished in third.

The Belmont Stakes purse is $2 million, which will be distributed among the horses with the winner getting the largest share.

This is equal to the Preakness Stakes’ $2 million pot, a majority of which went to Napoleon Solo who won the race in May.

The Kentucky Derby has the largest purse of the Triple Crown races with a total of $5 million to distribute to its participants. The winner, Golden Tempo, won $3.1 million.

Here is how the Belmont Stakes’ $2 million purse is broken down:
