While some viewers turn to television as a form of escapism, transporting themselves in comedies, sci-fi adventures, and sweeping romances, TV can also serve as a mirror to the real world, confronting audiences with difficult issues and challenging them to reconsider their perspectives. One series that exemplifies the latter is The Honorable Woman, a 2014 BBC political thriller that explores a conflict whose devastating consequences and far-reaching political implications remain as urgent and relevant as the day the series was released.

With Maggie Gyllenhall in the lead, The Honorable Woman, created by Hugo Blick, takes a personal perspective on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and follows a woman’s journey as she reckons with her family’s past, attempts to make amends, and tackles urgent, life-threatening issues head-on. The series, released on July 3, 2014, went on to receive four Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited Series and Outstanding Lead Actress.

What Is ‘The Honorable Woman’ About?

In The Honorable Woman, Gyllenhaal is Nessa Stein, a tough, determined woman who witnessed her father’s assassination when he was a child and has now inherited her father’s arms trading business alongside her brother, Ephra (Andrew Buchan). In an attempt to right her father’s wrongs, Nessa redirects the company’s mission toward peacebuilding, attempting to connect Israel and the West Bank through fiber-optic cables. Her redirection works at first, leading her humanitarian efforts to even earn her a seat in the House of Lords. But as the effects of her decisions begin to be felt, Nessa soon finds herself entangled in international politics.

Tensions then escalate when a Palestinian businessman connected to the Stein family’s enterprise is murdered shortly after receiving a lucrative contract. More than ever, Nessa and her brother find themselves under scrutiny from British intelligence services. The situation grows even more dangerous when a young boy is kidnapped, forcing Nessa to confront the consequences of her family’s past and the competing interests of governments and intelligence agencies. The Honorable Woman is ultimately an espionage thriller about a woman trying to undo the damage of her family’s past while navigating the realities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

‘The Honorable Woman’ Is More Timely Than Ever

From its premise alone, it’s clear that The Honourable Woman tackles a subject that is as relevant today as it was in 2014, if not more so. Nessa comes from a family that helped fuel the violence between Israel and Palestine, quite literally supplying the means for conflict through its arms business. Now, she’s determined to undo the damage her family helped cause, but decades of mistrust, political tensions, and bloodshed make the pursuit of peace far more complicated than she might have imagined. The series’ central themes, including intelligence operations, political manipulation, and the tension between humanitarian efforts and national interests, remain at the heart of global affairs 12 years later. Through Nessa’s attempts to build bridges between Israelis and Palestinians, the show illustrates how even well-intentioned peace initiatives can be undermined by entrenched grievances and competing political agendas, a warning that feels particularly urgent today.

With all that said, while audiences today might not have heard of The Honorable Woman, the series has remained an underrated hidden gem, one that not only delivers a poignant, gripping drama with growing tensions and incredible performances, but challenges viewers with its perspective of conflict, war and the bloodshed in the Middle East. The end result is a powerful eight-episode series that remains an urgent and timely warning to this day.
