10 Things Parents Should Never Compare Between Their Children
  1. Talents and Abilities

This means that comparison can place different forms of pressure on every child in the family.
What Parents Can Do Instead
Avoiding comparison does not mean ignoring differences between children. Parents can recognise those differences while still treating each child’s development as an individual journey.

Instead of asking why one child cannot perform like a sibling, parents can ask what that child is struggling with and what support might help. Instead of comparing examination scores, they can look at improvement. Rather than comparing personalities, they can help each child develop confidence and appropriate social skills.

Parents can also create individual goals. A child does not need to achieve the same things as a sibling to be successful, and a different path should not automatically be treated as a lesser one.

Most importantly, children need to know that parental love is not something they have to earn by winning against their siblings. Parents and caregivers play an important role in providing children with encouragement, guidance and acceptance as they develop emotionally, socially and cognitively.
Conclusion
Every child deserves the opportunity to grow without constantly being measured against a brother or sister. Academic performance, intelligence, appearance, personality, friendships, talents, behaviour, maturity and life achievements may differ from one child to another, but those differences should not determine a child’s value within the family.

Parents naturally want their children to succeed, but comparison is rarely the best way to encourage that success. Children are more likely to develop confidence when their efforts are recognised, their weaknesses are supported and their individual progress is taken seriously.

The more useful question is therefore not, “Why can’t you be like your brother or sister?” but, “What does this child need to become the best version of themselves?”

When parents make that shift, siblings have a better opportunity to celebrate one another rather than compete for approval. More importantly, children can grow up understanding that they do not need to become someone else to be worthy of love, encouragement and success.
