1 Bengals training camp bright spot won’t surprise fans

Cincinnati Bengals training camp features plenty of newsworthy items about key players enjoying a good summer so far. 

One of those items doesn’t feature a newcomer, nor is he a massive name, nor will he surprise fans much. 

The name? DJ Ivey.

Ivey, as fans might recall, made the 53-man roster in 2023 as a seventh-round pick, climbing as high as fourth on the depth chart and has since been a key depth piece while appearing in 36 games. 

It’s a trend that’s continuing, with The Athletic’s Paul Dehner Jr. recently writing that Ivey has been a standout from camp so far, even when asked to step up as a starter with the first team while others had rest days. 

“Ivey has made the most of his time running with the first team, with a pass breakup on a deep post from Burrow to Higgins on Tuesday, then in perfect position to break up another deep ball for Higgins on Thursday,” Dehner wrote. “He hasn’t been picked on consistently or caught out of step.”

It’s a big deal for a cornerback in Cincinnati to be standing out while lining up against Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. 

And for Ivey, it’s already well understood that he’s a great situational tight-end stopper when needed. The fact he’s still excelling on the boundary and even trusted to step into first-team reps when needed is a pretty good sign he’s headed for another solid season with multiple important roles.
