Youssoupha Niang to St. Pauli: Köln loan out attacker for the season

FC Köln have loaned attacking talent Youssoupha Niang to fellow Bundesliga side FC St. Pauli for the 2026-27 season, according to t-online, with no purchase option attached to the deal. It keeps the 20-year-old in the top flight despite his limited first-team minutes so far.

Köln sporting director Thomas Kessler said the move represents “the next right step” in the 20-year-old’s development, positioning St. Pauli as an environment where he can “take on new challenges at a high level” after injuries limited his chances in Cologne. St. Pauli sporting director Andreas Bornemann was equally direct about the club’s motivation, saying Niang “significantly expands our offensive options” thanks to his versatility and physical profile, a description that points to an immediate squad role rather than a developmental afterthought.

Niang came through every youth level at Köln before breaking into the first team last season, but managed only ten Bundesliga appearances alongside four in the Regionalliga West, where he scored three goals and added an assist for the reserves. The move keeps him in the top flight rather than dropping him down a level, a notable vote of confidence from St. Pauli given how limited his senior minutes have been so far.

For St. Pauli, adding attacking depth without paying a fee or committing to a permanent deal is low-risk business as they look to solidify their place back in the Bundesliga. For Köln, loaning out an academy product who couldn’t get consistent minutes gives him a season of senior football elsewhere while the club retains full control of his future.

Status: The loan is complete and official. Niang has already joined St. Pauli for the season, with the move confirmed by both clubs, no buy clause included, and no fee disclosed.
