Anthony Volpe spent Friday bouncing around the infield, and he thinks that is exactly how he can be useful in the playoffs. The Yankees infielder started at third base in the doubleheader opener against the Orioles, then moved to shortstop for the nightcap, where he delivered the biggest swing of the day in a 6-3 win that salvaged a split.

Asked how his defensive versatility might help New York in October, Volpe kept it simple. “We’ll see. It’s all hands on deck,” Volpe told YES Network reporter Meredith Marakovits after the game. “We’ve got everything to play for.”

The at-bat that mattered came in the sixth. With the Yankees already up 2-0, Volpe lifted a fly ball to right that carried over Rece Hinds and bounced into the stands for a two-run ground-rule double, pushing the lead to 4-0. He was hoping it would drop.

“I just wanted to have a good swing on a good pitch and do my job,” Volpe said.

It marked his first appearance at shortstop since August 1, the stretch during which George Lombard Jr. took over the position. Volpe was optioned to Triple-A in early August before returning in September, and the Yankees have since used him at second and third base as well as shortstop.

He was not the only story. Will Warren struck out seven and allowed three hits across 3 2/3 innings out of the bullpen, part of a 17-strikeout night for New York’s staff. Warren is expected to make the postseason roster as a reliever, and Volpe made clear the clubhouse has no doubts about him.

“I think he’s just an incredible pitcher. He works super hard,” Volpe said. “Whatever role he’s in, I think everyone’s super confident in him.”

The conditions were the other opponent. A nor’easter forced the doubleheader in the first place, and Volpe admitted the weather turned late. “They were all right until the end,” he said. “This is pretty brutal.”

The Yankees sit at 93-68 with one game left and have locked in the No. 4 seed, setting up a Wild Card Series rematch with the Red Sox in the Bronx.
