The New York Yankees took care of business without much fuss on Tuesday in Game 1 of their Wild Card series against the Boston Red Sox. Behind a strong start from AL Cy Young award frontrunner Cam Schlittler, who pitched 6.1 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out 10, the Yankees took a dominant 9-0 victory to come to within one win away of the ALDS.
This marks the second year in a row that Schlittler quieted the Red Sox in the Wild Card round, and it’s no secret just how much the 25-year-old loves to perform in front of his adoring fanbase at Yankee Stadium.
After his stellar start, Schlittler credited the atmosphere at Yankee Stadium for helping New York set the tone and take a commanding position in the Wild Card round against the Red Sox.

“It’s very easy to lock in… I feed off the crowd and the Bronx is a great place to play,” Schlittler said, via YES Network on X.

It is incredible that Schlittler is an even better pitcher on the road than he is at home; in 2026, he recorded an ERA of 1.16 in 17 starts on the road, while he “only” has an ERA of 2.86 at home. But in a postseason setting, playing in a friendly environment can make all the difference in a matchup between two teams that don’t have much talent dispairty.
He also has to be feeling a huge chip on his shoulder considering that the Red Sox, the franchise based near his hometown in Walpole, Massachusetts, overlooked him as a prospect all while the Yankees scouts believed in him.
But at the end of the day, two wins in the Wild Card is what gets it done for the Yankees. And for Schlittler, they cannot afford to get ahead of themselves.
“The job’s not done. Got to get another win tomorrow,” Schlittler added.
