Anthony Volpe did not have a quiet return to the big leagues. He made it as loud as he could, and he did it with his bat during Thursday’s series finale against the Colorado Rockies at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

In his first game back to the majors, Volpe went 3-for-5 with five RBIs. His grand slam in the seventh inning further buried the Rockies, as it stretched New York’s lead to eight runs, 10-2. The Yankees ultimately won the game to the tune of a 10-3 score.

“Unexpected whirlwind,” the 25-year-old Volpe said following the game, describing what the past 24 hours had been for him (h/t Gary Phillips of NY Daily News Sports).

Volpe was sent to the minors in August amid his struggles. George Lombard Jr. was then called up by the Yankees, taking over Volpe’s shortstop role in the majors. Now, Volpe is back with the show, but as a second baseman, with Jazz Chisholm Jr., hitting the injured list.

Those who have continued to follow Volpe even after he was sent to the minors may not be so surprised to see him shine in his first game back to the big leagues. After his demotion, he hit .284 (31-for-109) with 10 home runs and a 1.023 OPS.

Volpe’s future as a second baseman with the Yankees remains uncertain, but he clearly grabbed attention with his performance against the Rockies. If anything, he might have fans’ hope in him up again, and it’s on him to sustain his form and capitalize on the new opportunity to contribute to New York.

Before his demotion, Volpe was hitting .240/.325/.322 with just a home run and 19 RBIs in 56 games.
