Luke Weaver left the New York Yankees in free agency in the offseason to sign with the New York Mets.

The trends since then have been not exactly what you might think adds up.

Weaver has been great out of the Mets’ bullpen.

The Mets, though, have been brutal, and they could turn into trade deadline sellers.

And there await the Yankees, who predictable are missing Weaver and fellow Yankee-turned-Met, Devin Williams.

Yankees announcer Michael Kay suggested recently that they could look into bringing Weaver back.

A Mets-to-Yankees trade? It’s possible, especially considering the very different spots in the standings these teams find themselves in.

It helps that Weaver hasn’t given up a run in nearly two months. He’s a clear target for teams in need of a bullpen arm. The Mets can likely let a bit of a bidding war ensue to raise up his price.

It’s ironic, of course. The Yankees wanted Weaver to be this good for them, and last season, he struggled.

Those struggles were part of the reason the Yanks were so active at getting other bullpen arms at last year’s trade deadline, and why they let Weaver leave for the Mets.

The full-circle nature of this is amusing, especially from outside the Bronx.

But it’s definitely a real need for the Yankees, an obvious sell for the Mets and a match that could actually make sense.
