Yankees, Aaron Boone make decision at shortstop ahead of Guardians series

When the New York Yankees released their lineup for Game 1 of their crucial three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians, one decision immediately jumped off the page. Jose Caballero was back at shortstop. It may seem like a small lineup adjustment on the surface, but it could end up being one of the most important decisions manager Aaron Boone makes as the Yankees navigate a difficult stretch of the MLB season without Aaron Judge.

Caballero Earned the Opportunity

Caballero originally stepped into the starting shortstop role earlier this season when Anthony Volpe landed on the injured list. Few expected much offensively, but Caballero quickly became one of the Yankees’ most reliable contributors.

Not only did he come through with several timely hits, but he also provided elite defense. In fact, Caballero graded out as the best defensive shortstop in baseball in terms of defensive runs saved during his time as the starter. Every night, he seemed to make difficult plays look routine while bringing stability to the infield.

Unfortunately for both Caballero and the Yankees, his strong run was interrupted when he landed on the injured list himself.

A Utility Role Wasn’t Maximizing His Value

Once Caballero returned, Volpe was healthy and back in the lineup. Rather than reclaiming the shortstop position, Caballero was used in a variety of roles.

He spent time at third base, in the outfield, and occasionally at shortstop, becoming one of the team’s most versatile players. While versatility is valuable, it also prevents the Yankees from fully benefiting from what Caballero does best. That is playing elite defense at shortstop.

The Yankees Should Stick With It

Caballero’s return to shortstop against Cleveland feels significant. The Yankees have struggled defensively at times this season, and with Judge sidelined, preventing runs becomes even more important. Caballero gives the team a defensive upgrade while also bringing more offensive value than many expected when the season began.

Volpe might remain an important part of the Yankees future, but right now the team needs to prioritize winning games. If Caballero continues to provide Gold Glove-caliber defense and timely offense, Boone’s decision should become a permanent one. The Yankees finally put Caballero back at shortstop Monday night. If they’re smart, he’ll stay there.
