X-Men Finally Meet Marvel's Most Powerful Mutant For First Time
Years after her secret introduction, the X-Men‘s most powerful villain finally decides to face the mutant heroes. The X-Men’s most dangerous enemies aren’t necessarily the ones capable of leveling cities and manipulating reality. In fact, some of the mutants’ most persistent villains are frightening because their greatest weapons have little to do with superpowers. For instance, Mister Sinister is an exceptionally dangerous geneticist whose obsession with mutant evolution has caused generations of suffering. Sabretooth presents a different kind of danger due to his vicious personality and sheer cruelty, which human extremists take to a country-wide and worldwide scale.
On the flip side, some of the X-Men’s most powerful enemies have little interest in conquering or destroying the Earth despite possessing enough power to become threats to the wider Marvel Universe. Cassandra Nova’s telepathic abilities could allow her to become the ultimate anti-Charles Xavier and unleash a global crisis, but her hatred of mutants and obsession with Charles Xavier give her a much more personal motivation. Likewise, Mojo and Shadow King have access to entire extraneous dimensions, but they’re equally fixated on the X-Men and mutantkind.
If the X-Men have learned something about their villains, it’s that hatred is the most dangerous source of conflict within their villains, especially when they’re naturally powerful.
Justina LaGuardia Embraces Her Role As An X-Men Villain
X-Men United ; Written By Eve L. Ewing & Evan Narcisse; Art By Ruarí Coleman, Roberto Poggi, And Brian Reber
In X-Men United, Justina LaGuardia has adopted the fitting codename Superior and stepped out of the shadows to harness her potential as an X-Men antagonist. Having originally rejected Charles Xavier’s recruitment when Professor X was assembling his original team, Justina LaGaurdia has spent years honing her terrifying mutant ability to duplicate and surpass the superpowers of anyone in her vicinity. Now, Justina reveals her existence to the X-Men, orchestrating schemes like the kidnapping of Blade’s daughter Brielle and tempting Emma Frost to fight her by brushing off the White Queen’s psionic attack and tapping into her mind.
Justina LaGuardia’s willingness to become an X-Men villain is a direct result of her ideological opposition to everything Charles Xavier and his successors represent. From her perspective as a former Italian detective, the X-Men are a group of child soldiers that only bring destruction everywhere they go. Justina genuinely believes that gathering young mutants together at institutions like Graymatter Lane repeats Xavier’s worst mistakes and causes far more harm than good. Compounded by a mischievous personality, Justina finds joy in overpowering the X-Men and showing them how weak and unstable they actually are.
Justina LaGuardia Works Best As A Character Who Rejects Heroism And Villainy

Justina LaGuardia stands apart from the binary of conventional heroes and villains since her debut. Her independence was established from the very beginning, when she flatly rejected Charles Xavier’s invitation to become a founding member of the original X-Men, refusing to be molded into someone’s soldier. Instead of seeking glory using her incredibly overpowered mutation, Justina chose a life in the shadows and mastered her ability to surpass the powers of those around her without ever needing a mentor or a team. This decision shouldn’t change permanently now that she has unveiled her presence and started to attack the X-Men.
Notably, Justina LaGuardia also refuses to align herself with the X-Men’s other villains just as firmly as she rejects the heroes. All these years, LaGuardia has pursued a solitary path dictated entirely by her personal ideology and her whims. Even though she could easily provide her powers to the highest bidder or help the X-Men’s villains destroy the team she rejected, Justina simply acts as a self-directed wildcard who sees both mutant revolutionaries and human oppressors as fundamentally flawed. Hence, after her first encounter with the X-Men, Justina LaGuardia should ideally preserve her status as a fascinatingly unpredictable mutant.
