World Cup: ‘You’re the best’ – Zlatan Ibrahimovic hails 18-year-old star after penalty miss
Football icon, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, has sent a message to Lucas Herrington following Australia’s Round of 32 match against Egypt in the 2026 World Cup.
He commended the young player for his bravery in taking a penalty during the shootout, referring to him as “the best.”
The Socceroos played against the Pharaohs at Dallas Stadium in Arlington on Friday.
Emam Ashour opened the scoring for Egypt in the 13th minute with a header after being left unmarked in the penalty area. Australia equalized in the 55th minute when Mohamed Hany accidentally directed a cross into his own goal.
Both teams battled fiercely for the remainder of the match, and neither could secure a victory even after extra time. The game proceeded to a penalty shootout, during which Harry Souttar missed his attempt by shooting over the bar.
After a series of successful penalties, 18-year-old Lucas Herrington took his turn but unfortunately struck the crossbar.
Hossam Abdelmaguid converted the final penalty for Egypt, securing their advancement to the Round of 16. Following the match, Zlatan Ibrahimovic reached out to Herrington.
He stated on Fox Sports, “I want to connect with Herrington. At just 18 years old, you are still at the beginning of your journey. Your decision to step up showed immense courage.
“Not everyone would have the guts to do that. My friend, you are the best. Remember, Herrington, if you wish to talk, I am here.”
Herrington holds the record as the youngest player in MLS history and is also the youngest starter for Australia in this tournament.
