World Cup: Troost-Ekong names South Africa’s best player in 1-0 defeat to Canada

Former Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong has identified Mbekezile Mbokazi as the standout player for South Africa in Bafana Bafana’s 1-0 loss to Canada in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Chicago Fire FC defender showcased an impressive performance at the center of South Africa’s defense, effectively thwarting the Canadians for a significant portion of the match until Stephen Eustáquio scored late, securing Canada’s advancement to the Round of 16.

During his analysis on SuperSport, Ekong highlighted the young defender as the most notable performer for Bafana Bafana that evening.

“It speaks volumes that Mbokazi was the best player on the South African team. I believe Okon also had considerable possession of the ball,” Ekong stated.

Ekong further noted that South Africa had chances in the final 30 minutes of the second half when they adopted a more offensive approach, but their choice to wait and see the outcome in extra time ultimately led to their defeat.

“In the second half, there were chances in the last half hour as they became more attack-oriented.

“They were waiting to see what would transpire in extra time, and I think that decision cost them today,” he explained.
