Wirtz determined to get Liverpool first Premier League win of season

Florian Wirtz has urged Liverpool to get back to winning ways against Ipswich Town, having started their Premier League season with two draws.

Both of Liverpool’s league games have ended up 2-2 in 2026-27 so far, against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest, respectively.

In both matches, the Reds had to twice come from behind to earn a point, needing goals in the final 10 minutes or stoppage time to ensure they did not walk away empty-handed.

They have only conceded 2+ goals in their first three games once before in the competition, doing so in 2012-13 in Brendan Rodgers’ first three games in charge.

And while Wirtz was proud of the fighting spirit Liverpool showed, he noted that it was not good enough to still be waiting for three points.

“I’m very disappointed,” Wirtz told Liverpoolfc.com about the Forest draw. “Of course, we demand from ourselves the most.

“We couldn’t take the three points again, that’s why I’m disappointed. We have to keep working on the things we can do better, and we have to get back to winning ways.

“We want more, we don’t want to be proud that we came back into the game after we conceded. We want to be on top of the opponents and want to be better than them and take the wins.”

Ipswich, meanwhile, started the season with a last-gasp win over Sunderland, but suffered a heavy 5-2 defeat to Manchester United last time out.

They made a strong start at Old Trafford, taking the lead, but could not hold on amid a second-half flurry of goals.

Ipswich went back to the transfer window to help strengthen as they bid to stay in the Premier League this season, and signed Zian Flemming on deadline day.

“I am really proud to sign for Ipswich Town,” the Dutchman, who scored 11 Premier League goals last term, told the club’s website.

“I played in the Premier League last season and really enjoyed my first season at the top level, competing against the best players and teams in the world, so I am delighted to now be back in there with a great club like Ipswich.

“I will give my all every time I step onto the pitch and can’t wait to meet the supporters. The first game is on Friday against Liverpool, which is very soon, and I am excited to get started.”

Across their opening two Premier League games, Abdul Fatawu has created more chances (five), played more passes into the box (nine) and won more duels (14) than any other Ipswich player.

Only Julio Enciso (178) has applied more pressures than the Ghanaian (120).

Alexander Isak has four goals in just two Premier League appearances against Ipswich, all for Newcastle in 2024-25.

Three of those were as a hat-trick at Portman Road, making him the joint-second top scorer there that season, behind only Liam Delap (six).

Liverpool are unbeaten in all six away Premier League matches against Ipswich at Portman Road (W4 D2). It is the most games they have played at one stadium without losing in the competition.

Ipswich have lost their last four Premier League games against Liverpool across the 2001-02 and 2024-25 seasons, conceding 17 goals and scoring just once.

And Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 20 Premier League matches against newly promoted sides (W15 D5), but the last side to beat them were a Bournemouth side managed by current Ipswich boss Gary O’Neil in March 2023.

Despite that record, Liverpool do come into this game on a winless streak; they have failed to win their last six Premier League matches (D4 L2). Only once before have they gone seven or more matches without winning in the competition, a run of 11 from November 2002 to January 2003 under Gerard Houllier.

Ipswich are unbeaten in their last 18 home league games, 17 in the Championship last season and a 2-1 win against Sunderland this term. They have not won consecutive Premier League home games since a run of four in December 2001/January 2002.
