Wings get down to 23-man roster limit, but Edvinsson remains unsigned

DETROIT – The Red Wings have gotten down to 23 players – but whether it’s exactly the opening night roster or not, remains to be seen.

The Wings got down to a 23-man roster at Monday’s 5 p.m. deadline, but there are still many variables involved.

For now, young defensemen Axel Sandin-Pellikka, Anton Johansson and William Wallinder all remain with Wings, as the Wings placed defenseman Jacob Bernard-Docker (upper-body) on injured reserve and designated defenseman Andreas Englund as immigration non-roster.

Also, and most importantly on defense, Simon Edvinsson remains unsigned and didn’t practice Monday at BELFOR Training Center. Edvinsson had been practicing and doing drill work — though not scrimmaging or playing in any of the preseason games — since training camp began.

“As of today, Simon is not practicing with the team,” Shawn Horcoff, interim general manager, said in a statement. “The organization will continue conversations with Simon and his representatives.”

The Wings also kept Dylan Larkin on the roster. Larkin (upper-body) didn’t play any of the four preseason games, but has practiced daily since Wednesday, though coach Todd McLellan was still uncertain as to whether Larkin will be ready for Friday’s regular season opener against the New York Rangers.

Forwards Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, Nate Danielson and Carter Mazur all are presently on the Wings’ roster.

The Wings assigned goaltender Carter Gylander to Grand Rapids, and forwards Carter Bear and Chase Stillman as injured non-roster, to get to the 23-man limit.
