William Byron delivered a dominant performance at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday, winning the Xfinity 500 and leading Hendrick Motorsports to a one two finish. Byron controlled much of the 500-lap race before holding off teammate Chase Elliott, who finished second, to secure his first victory of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season.

The victory was especially impressive at the historic Virginia short track, where track position and tire strategy played major roles throughout the afternoon. Byron won both opening stages and led 362 laps, establishing himself as the driver to beat.

Elliott finished just over two seconds behind Byron, while Ty Gibbs completed the podium in third. Josh Berry and Shane van Gisbergen rounded out the top five.

Byron Controls the Race

The race featured several strategic battles, particularly during the opening stage. Drivers who stayed on older tires struggled as competitors who pitted gained speed and track position.

Byron capitalized on the situation, passing Ryan Preece late in the opening stage to claim the segment victory. He continued building momentum through the second stage and maintained his advantage during the final portion of the race.

While other drivers battled traffic and dealt with changing track conditions, Byron consistently found speed and kept his No. 24 Chevrolet near the front.

His performance gave Hendrick Motorsports a major result heading into the season finale.

Championship Battle Tightens

Although Byron celebrated the victory, much of the attention remained on the championship fight.

Kyle Larson finished ninth after struggling with an early pit strategy that left him a lap down. However, he recovered enough to maintain a commanding points advantage.

Larson now leads Christopher Bell by 67 points and Denny Hamlin by 70 points heading into the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Hamlin finished sixth after recovering from a difficult opening stage and a mid-race incident. Bell finished 10th after contact with Joey Logano sent him spinning alongside Hamlin.

Homestead Will Decide the Champion

The Martinsville race provided plenty of drama, but the championship remains undecided. Larson enters the finale in an excellent position to capture his third Cup Series title, while Bell and Hamlin need an extraordinary performance to close the gap.

Byron leaves Martinsville with a statement victory, but all eyes now turn to Homestead, where NASCAR’s 2026 champion will finally be crowned.
