Vaibhav Sooryavanshi hasn’t played a single ball against West Indies so far, and with the third T20I in Indore coming up, there is little to suggest that his wait for a game will end today.
The teenager was left out of the second match in Ranchi as well, and the early signs point to India sticking with the batting order that has just delivered a huge total.
Before the match there had been plenty of talk about whether he would take Sanju Samson’s place at the top of the order, mainly because Samson managed only 11 in the series opener at Lucknow.
The team management decided to show faith in Samson instead, and the decision paid off almost immediately.
Samson answered the doubts in the best way possible, smashing 82 off just 41 balls and reaching his fifty in only 21 deliveries. His innings set the tone for the rest of the line-up, and India finished on 249 for 5, a score that looked well out of the visitors’ reach on paper.

It looks unlikely. Sanju Samson’s fifty has quietened the debate about the opening slot, and Abhishek Sharma is firmly established as the other opener, so India’s top order appears to be in good look.
With the series tied at 1-1 going into the Holkar Stadium game, head coach Gautam Gambhir and the rest of the team management are probably more interested in keeping a settled batting line-up than in trying something new.
That doesn’t rule Sooryavanshi out of the series, but it does suggest he will have to be patient for the time being.
