He made clear he was not in favour of such an outcome, framing the captain’s possible departure as deeply regrettable for English cricket at this stage of the summer.
“I fear from everything I hear that Stokes is going to act first. And, regretfully, I hear that he is going to step down and possibly even retire. I think that would be hugely regrettable, and I hope he doesn’t,” Dobell said. ” I hope he stands and fights his ground, which is the Ben Stokes we know.”
But while he remains optimistic, this isn’t the first time that a player’s wild behavior has plagued the national side.

Wisden editor Lawrence Booth acknowledged that England can no longer deny having a behavioral problem. While McCullum continues to be the head coach for the national side, the England team’s whole identity of explosive hitting and fast-paced bowling was built on Stokes’ captaincy.
Since the New Zealand legend took over the helm as coach, it was Stokes’ wild mix of power-hitting and audacious bowling decisions that led them to multiple famous victories.
If he is indeed forced out of the national side, then England will need to replan their whole approach to Test cricket without their talismanic leader. While the roster still boasts some of the best names in Test cricket, including a returning Ollie Robinson, it is a decision that will absolutely derail their momentum and game plan before the second Test.
England resumes the Test series against New Zealand on June 17 at The Oval, with Stokes’s and Atkinson’s availability for the second Test entirely dependent on the outcome of the ECB investigation.
