Why There's No Ghosts Tonight (November 5) & When New Episodes Release

It’s been one week since Ghosts aired its latest Halloween special, but there’s an important reason why a new episode isn’t going to air tonight. Ghosts season 6 is the next official installment in the series, which typically returns every Fall to CBS. As with previous seasons of the sitcom, the new episodes follow Sam Arondekar and her husband, Jay, in the Woodstone Bed & Breakfast, which is populated by spirits only Sam can see. The series follows the ongoing lives of the couple as well as the ghosts that occupy their home.

Ghosts season 5 ended in May 2026 with a number of loose threads expected to be picked up during season 6. This includes the disappearance of Pete, who vanished out of nowhere during the two-part season 5 finale. This particular cliffhanger was a core part of the show’s latest 2026 Halloween special, the first two-part Halloween episode of the entire show. In the hour-long event, Jay and Kyle buy a mirror that’s unknowingly haunted by Hetty’s sister, Margaret. This makes up the bulk of the episode after the mirror is broken and Jay and Kyle must fix it.

However, after events between Hetty and Margaret are resolved, the Halloween special delivers a massive cliffhanger ending: Pete returns to the lawn of Woodstone, without any memory of having died nor of the other ghosts haunting the location. It’s a big place to leave the special off, and lays the groundwork for whatever the series has in store for the future. However, this particular cliffhanger will have to wait, since the characters of Ghosts won’t be returning tonight, nor anytime soon.

Ghosts Season 6 Has Not Yet Officially Started

While the Ghosts Halloween special can technically be classified as the start of Ghosts season 6, the show hasn’t actually returned just yet. The Halloween special is considered an interlude of sorts between seasons 5 and 6, not quite the start of the next season. While Pete’s return makes it a direct follow-up to the end of Ghosts season 5, its placement as a special rather than a season premiere means the show still isn’t at the point where the final season has properly begun.

Instead, season 6 will begin in mid-season 2027, due to an overflow of TV series airing within the 2026-27 year on CBS. However, that doesn’t mean the show won’t be coming back again before its proper premiere date. Two specials have been planned for before season 6 begins. The first of these, the Halloween special, aired last week. The second of these is a Christmas special which, while not airing tonight, will arrive on CBS before the end of the year.

Season 6 has been confirmed to air as a full season, expected to be as long as previous seasons of the show.

The next episodes of Ghosts will be a Christmas special, another hour-long episode set to premiere on Thursday, December 10, 2026 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Information about the special was originally released during San Diego Comic-Con, where it was revealed it will be pulling inspiration from Die Hard. It’s also expected to reference A Christmas Carol and It’s a Wonderful Life, while also having the highest stakes any episode of the show has ever dealt with. This includes one ghost entering the nearby town thanks to one of their skills.

Although the exact nature of the special hasn’t been fully unveiled yet, it’s also expected to follow-up on the Halloween special’s cliffhanger involving Pete’s return. There’s no way of knowing how all this will play out just yet, but the two-part special is only a month away. This means some pretty big story developments are inevitable for Ghosts, even before season 6 begins. Although the return is still a month away, it sounds like it’ll be quite worth the wait.
