The most remarkable aspect of a teacher’s influence is that it can continue after the teacher is no longer part of the student’s daily life.

Students eventually leave school and enter universities, workplaces, businesses and wider society. They make decisions, encounter failures, build relationships and face responsibilities that their teachers may never witness.

Yet some of the beliefs developed in the classroom can travel with them.

A student who was encouraged to speak may become more willing to contribute during professional meetings. A student who learned to approach difficult subjects patiently may apply the same attitude to workplace challenges. A young person who was treated with dignity when they made mistakes may learn to respond to other people’s mistakes with greater patience.

The influence is not always direct or easy to measure. Teachers are one part of a much larger environment that shapes children’s lives, alongside parents, families, friends, communities and individual experiences. Nevertheless, research continues to show that teacher-student relationships have meaningful associations with student engagement and development.

For example, research involving students across the first years of education found that teacher-student relationship quality was related to later educational and social outcomes, with the effects of closer relationships accumulating over time.

This is important because students do not necessarily experience every teacher in the same way. A learner may feel confident in one classroom and withdrawn in another. They may enjoy a subject because of the way one teacher presents it and struggle to engage when taught differently.

A teacher can therefore become part of the reason a student begins to see a subject differently.

This can happen in Nigerian classrooms as well. A student may enter secondary school convinced that science is too difficult, only to encounter a teacher who connects scientific concepts to everyday experiences. Another may believe that they are poor at writing until a teacher takes their ideas seriously and shows them how to organise them. A child from a family where university education feels distant may meet a teacher who encourages them to consider possibilities they had never imagined.

The teacher may simply believe they are doing their job. The student may remember the experience for the rest of their life.

Teachers also sometimes become important sources of encouragement for students facing academic disappointment. A poor examination result can feel enormous to a young person. When a teacher helps the student understand that one result does not determine their entire future, the teacher is providing more than academic advice.

They are helping the student put failure into perspective.

That can influence whether the student gives up or tries again. The same principle applies to students who are already successful. High-performing learners also need teachers who challenge them rather than allowing achievement to become the limit of their development. A teacher who encourages a bright student to explore new ideas, take intellectual risks or work beyond familiar subjects can influence the student’s ambitions in ways that may only become clear years later.

Sometimes, students do not recognise the value of a teacher’s influence until adulthood.

As adults, former students may look back and understand why a particular teacher was different. They may realise that a teacher’s patience helped them through a difficult period. They may remember being encouraged when their confidence was low. They may recognise that their interest in a particular profession began with a classroom experience.

The teacher may not remember the incident at all.

For the student, it may remain one of the clearest memories of school. This is why teachers should not underestimate ordinary interactions. Not every important contribution requires a major intervention. Sometimes, consistency is more powerful than a dramatic gesture.

Showing up prepared, listening carefully, giving useful feedback, recognising improvement and treating students with dignity may seem like basic professional responsibilities. Yet when students experience these things repeatedly, they can begin to develop a stronger sense of confidence and belonging.

The impact may be invisible at first. A teacher may not see the student become more confident immediately. They may not know whether a recommendation eventually leads to a career choice. They may not witness the moment a former student succeeds in a field they once struggled to understand.

Nevertheless, the influence can remain. This is perhaps one of the most meaningful realities of teaching: teachers often contribute to futures they will never see.

The student sitting at the back of the classroom may eventually become a doctor, journalist, engineer, entrepreneur, lawyer, teacher, researcher or public servant. The quiet child may become a confident professional. The student who once struggled academically may eventually discover an area in which they excel.

The teacher may have moved to another school by then. The classroom may have changed. The student’s life may have taken an entirely different direction. Yet something learned from that teacher can remain.

For this reason, the impact of a teacher should not be measured only by examination results or the number of students who achieve the highest grades. Academic achievement matters, but so do confidence, curiosity, resilience, discipline, communication and the willingness to keep learning. Teachers contribute to all of these through everyday interactions.
