Why 2026 NBA Draft could define Memphis Grizzlies' future. Here are 3 reasons

Maybe it’s hyperbolic to call this the biggest draft in Memphis Grizzlies history.

After all, the franchise acquired Shane Battier and Pau Gasol with top-10 picks in its first draft after relocating to Memphis in 2001. In 2019, one year after drafting Jaren Jackson Jr., the Grizzlies landed Ja Morant and Brandon Clarke in the first round.

Those drafts helped define eras of Grizzlies basketball, and several others deserve mention as well.

The Grizzlies own the No. 3 overall pick in what is widely viewed as one of the deepest and most talented draft classes in recent memory. Memphis also holds the No. 16 and No. 32 picks, giving it three selections in the top 35.

And the significance of this draft extends far beyond the players selected June 23-24.

The Grizzlies are the only team with three picks in the top 35, and they also possess an enviable stockpile of future draft assets. Memphis could own as many as three first-round picks in 2027 and controls all of its own first-round picks through 2032.

That flexibility gives the Grizzlies options. If Memphis wants to move up from No. 16 or No. 32, it has the assets to make an aggressive move without sacrificing its long-term outlook.

Recent changes to the NBA Draft Lottery have altered how teams value first-round picks. With flattened lottery odds and increased uncertainty at the top of the draft, franchises may become more reluctant to trade selections that carry lottery potential.

While Memphis owns a wealth of future picks, there’s no guarantee those assets will ever match the value of what the Grizzlies have in hand right now.

This is the moment to be aggressive.

In today’s NBA, even the league’s worst teams are no longer guaranteed premium draft positioning. Opportunities like this don’t come around often.

Just as it was in 2001 and 2019, the Grizzlies find themselves at a crossroads.

New faces are expected to arrive and help shape the franchise’s future. But unlike those previous turning points, this one comes with greater expectations.

The Grizzlies reached their first playoff appearance three years after the 2001 draft. The core formed around the 2018 and 2019 drafts eventually advanced to the Western Conference semifinals.

This draft isn’t simply about finding productive NBA players that can get you to the playoffs. The Grizzlies have proven they can do that.

This draft is about finding the player who changes everything.

A franchise cornerstone. A championship-level difference maker.
