KANSAS CITY, MO — Argentina took an early lead in its World Cup quarterfinal against Switzerland, with Alexis Mac Allister putting a lofted header past Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel in the 10th minute of their knockout contest.
Lionel Messi put his corner kick toward the near post where Mac Allister rose to meet it with a light touch. That sent the shot toward the back post and into the net.

It cut short what had been a bright start for the European squad and gave a pro-Argentina crowd in Kansas City hope that perhaps this match won’t be as nervous as Argentina’s extra-time win over Cape Verde in the round of 32 or a 3-2 win over Egypt in the round of 16 when the Albiceleste needed to come from 2-0 down to advance to this stage.
Despite the difficult in those matchups, Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni opted to make no changes to his starting lineup and reaped the reward of an early advantage.
