INGLEWOOD, CA — The World Cup knockout stage begins when Canada faces South Africa on Sunday, June 28.
The match at SoFi Stadium will be the first World Cup knockout game for both countries, making it an historic occasion.
Canada finished second in Group B while South Africa finished second in Group A, setting up the matchup between the two nations.
The man in the center of it all will be referee João Pinheiro from Portugal, who will be assisted by his countrymen Bruno Jesus and Luciano Maia.
This is the first World Cup for Pinheiro, who took charge of the group-stage match between Switzerland and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Pinheiro, 38, is an experienced official, taking charge of matches in the Portuguese league, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, the UEFA Europa League and more.
