Who is Dusty May? Dallas Mavericks’ NBA rookie head coach is a college basketball legend

Dusty May is jumping from the top of college basketball into one of the NBA’s most intriguing rebuilds.

The Dallas Mavericks are handing their next chapter to a rookie NBA head coach.

They are also hiring someone who just proved he can build a champion quickly.

Mavericks bring Dusty May’s title pedigree to Dallas

Shams Charania reported that May has agreed to become Dallas’ new head coach, fresh off leading Michigan to the 2026 NCAA title.

May’s path started far from NBA glamour. He was a student manager at Indiana under Bob Knight, worked video roles at USC and Indiana, then assisted at Eastern Michigan, Murray State, UAB, Louisiana Tech, and Florida.

Florida Atlantic gave him his first head-coaching job in 2018. Five years later, he took a program with no NCAA Tournament wins to the Final Four. At Michigan, he moved even faster, winning the 2026 national title, Big Ten regular-season crown, and Big Ten tournament in only his second year.

His player-development record is part of the appeal. Michigan’s Aday Mara, Yaxel Lendeborg and Morez Johnson Jr. are all expected to be selected in the 2026 NBA Draft, with all three projected in or near the lottery.

May’s former players in NBA organizations include Alijah Martin, Vladislav Goldin, and Johnell Davis from his FAU tree, plus Florida-era forward Dorian Finney-Smith. His family is tied to the sport too. He and his wife Anna have three sons: Jack, Charlie, and Eli.

May now joins Billy Donovan, Rick Pitino, Jerry Tarkanian, and Larry Brown as the last five NCAA champion coaches to make the NBA head-coaching leap. Donovan became a steady pro coach. Pitino and Tarkanian struggled. Brown became the dream outcome, winning titles at both levels.

Dusty May’s philosophy can unlock Cooper Flagg

The Dallas fit starts with Cooper Flagg.

May’s best teams have leaned into spacing, early offense, ball screens, role clarity, and versatile frontcourt players who can pass, defend, and make decisions. That is the environment Flagg needs after arriving as the Mavericks’ 2025 No. 1 pick and franchise reset button.

Flagg should not be boxed into one role. May can use him as a handler, screener, cutter, weakside defender, and late-clock creator, the same type of freedom he gave to Michigan’s long, skilled frontcourt.

College control does not always translate to NBA locker rooms, schedules, or stars. But Dallas is pairing a proven teacher with a 19-year-old cornerstone and Masai Ujiri’s new front office vision.

May has never coached an NBA game, but the Mavericks hired him because his college career already looks like a proof of concept.
