The New York Mets made their first major move in addressing this lost 2026 season, firing manager Carlos Mendoza on Friday, June 26.

The team enters Friday night’s series opener at home against the Philadelphia Phillies on a six-game losing streak and a 34–47 record that has them sitting in the basement of the NL East.

In the team’s statement, they announced that Andy Green will take over as interim manager for the rest of the season.

Here’s what to know about Green:

Green, who joined the Mets organization ahead of the 2024 season, had been serving as the team’s Senior Vice President for Player Development. He was overseeing the Mets’ farm system and minor league operations.

Green previously managed the San Diego Padres from 2016 until his firing in September 2019. The Padres were rebuilding with young players for most of his time there as he compiled a 274–366 record.

Green was a utility infielder who played with the Arizona Diamondbacks (2004-06) and Mets organization in 2009 as he also spent a season in Japan.
