What to know about LSU baseball star OF Jake Brown

LSU baseball outfielder Jake Brown has been a constant in his team’s lineup for the past three seasons.

The Sulphur, Louisiana native wanted to play for LSU growing up as a kid in the state and Jay Johnson afforded him that opportunity. And he ended up being a multi-year starter for the Tigers during his time in Baton Rouge.

During his three seasons at LSU, Brown hit .304 for his career with 111 runs and 110 RBIs. He smashed 28 home runs, 16 of those coming in his junior campaign this past season. He also stole nine bases and had seven of 20 career doubles in 2026.

The Texas Rangers selected Brown out of Sulphur High School in the 16th round of the 2023 MLB Draft. At the time, he wanted to play for the Tigers so he decided to come to LSU.

That decision quickly paid off as he ended up starting 21 games and playing in 56 as a freshman in 2024, hitting four home runs while scoring 23 runs and knocking in 13 runs while platooning with Ashton Larson in right field.

During an at-bat in a game against Texas A&M late in the 2026 season, Brown felt discomfort in his right hand. Evaluation and tests revealed that he had fractured his hamate bone in his right hand.

The injury ended Brown’s season and likely his LSU career as he needed surgery to correct it. He waited until after the season was over before going through with the surgery but he still traveled with the team while he was on the sidelines.

Before the injury, Brown was having the best season of his collegiate career, leading the team in home runs at the time and was on pace to put up career marks in runs scored. He did have a career-high in RBIs with 49 before his season came to an end.

One of many things Johnson liked about Brown was his ability to play in the field and pitch. Because of that, he was rated the top prospect in Louisiana in his graduating class.

He ended up being named the 2023 Gatorade Louisiana Baseball Player of the Year after going 10-2 on the mound with a 1.71 ERA while striking out 118 in 73⅔ innings. Brown allowed just 39 hits his senior year and ranked the 18th best lefthanded high school pitcher in 2023.

Brown also did damage at the plate as well, hitting seven homers while leading Sulphur to the state semifinals that year.

But he quickly figured out once he got to LSU that his future was in the field as he had a rough outing on the mound during his first fall scrimmage in 2023.
