The WNBA is in an even deeper hole in regards to the transgender situation after an incident during the Indiana Fever vs. Atlanta Dream game.

Courtside controversy erupted during the Fever-Dream matchup when arena security mistakenly forced a mother and daughter to cover up their “XX-XY” shirts, sending league officials and the Atlanta Dream scrambling into damage control.

Both the league and team quickly issued statements clarifying that security acted in error, but the incident proves just how difficult it is becoming to keep off-court political battles out of the stands.

Those biological chromosome tees have quickly become a bold statement piece for fans backing Sophie Cunningham, following the massive uproar over her comments on transgender athletes that got her name shadow-banned on the main WNBA subreddit.

After the WNBA’s rather weak statement, many fans weren’t expecting much in regards to potential action against the security in question.

And a report from The Athletic revealed the small action that was taken after the matter.

It states: ‘The security officials have been informed by the league that they acted incorrectly by asking the messages to be covered. The WNBA provides security for all league games.’

That response predictably falls well short of true accountability. Rather than extending a direct apology to the fans involved, league officials quietly issued an internal memo clarifying that personnel acted in error.

The move feels like a quiet effort to brush the incident under the rug without addressing the deeper issues. While the WNBA claims to support free expression, quietly reprimanding security behind closed doors while ignoring the fans directly impacted shows a clear reluctance to defend fan speech.
