What Scottie Scheffler has just said surely opens the door for LIV golfers to return to the PGA Tour

Scottie Scheffler has been the standout player in professional golf over the past four years.

Since February 2022, Scheffler has won 21 PGA Tour titles, including four major championships.

The 30-year-old has been breaking all kinds of records during that period, and he has been the number one golfer in the world for 170 weeks.

Scottie Scheffler needs to stay at the top of the rankings for another 112 consecutive weeks to break Tiger Woods’ all-time record.

The man from Dallas, Texas, may not be as much of a blockbuster star as Woods was, but he is still one of the PGA Tour‘s main poster boys.

Taking that into account, it is always very interesting to hear his views and opinions on the current state of LIV Golf.

Scheffler is regularly asked about LIV Golf during his press conferences, but his latest response was perhaps his most telling yet regarding how he really feels about the league and its players.

The world number one addressed the media on Wednesday ahead of the start of the BMW Championship.

Scheffler was asked whether he would welcome the PGA Tour offering certain LIV players similar deals to the one that Brooks Koepka was given back in January.

“Yeah, I think, like, when we talk about the best players, you know, LIV has a few players that are really good,“ the world number one said.

“I think the depth that we have on our TOUR is a bit unmatched, but I think when you look at the higher levels of LIV Golf there’s definitely some players that would provide a lot of value to the Tour, and guys that I love competing against as well.

“So I think going forward there obviously has to be, I think, some sort of penalty. What those are, I’ll let Rolapp and all those guys figure it out. We have great leadership within the TOUR now.

“But I think having those guys come back and competing with whatever happens with LIV, whether those guys want to leave, I mean, you got to ask them.

“I think for me, being able to compete against the best players in the world, there are certainly some guys on that TOUR that can compete out here and I look forward to the chance to compete with them more often.“

Now, these comments could be vital to the hopes of LIV golfers returning to the PGA Tour.

That’s because Scheffler is one of the PGA Tour’s two biggest stars, alongside Rory McIlroy of course.

Scottie Scheffler’s comments could prove vital for LIV players

McIlroy has been extremely outspoken about his disdain for LIV Golf, and he almost certainly would have given his opinion on the matter to PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp.

So with that in mind, Scheffler being keen for certain LIV golfers to return will be hugely important.

The 30-year-old holds a lot of sway on the PGA Tour, and Rolapp and his cohorts will obviously be keen to keep him happy.

If Scheffler makes it clear to the PGA Tour hierarchy that the Returning Player Program created for Brooks Koepka should be used for the likes of Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau, there is every chance we could see those players back very soon.

The 21-time PGA Tour winner is desperate to compete against the very best golfers in the world on a more regular basis outside of the four major championships.

And having the likes of Rahm and DeChambeau back on the PGA Tour would undoubtedly provide Scheffler with that.

It would also be a great thing for golf fans in general.
