What Ja'Kobi Gillespie is doing right as a Spurs rookie
SALT LAKE CITY – Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said rookie Ja’Kobi Gillespie’s big outing in Monday night’s 119-109 loss to the Utah Jazz highlighted what has been a strong camp and preseason for the second-round guard.
Gillespie scored 15 of his game-high 25 points against the Jazz in the fourth quarter.
“He’s a guy that in terms of what we’re looking for from every single person on our roster, the way that he’s guarding and competing, sharing the basketball, playing with pace, being aggressive, attacking, (is doing a good job),” Johnson said. “He’s not perfect, but he’s playing with confidence and putting his energy in the right spots. The next thing you know, he has a lot of opportunities and advantageous spots that he finds himself in.”
Playing against the Jazz reserves, Gillespie hit 6 of 8 from the field and 3 of 4 from 3-point range in the final frame to finish 9 of 14 and 4 of 8 in 25 minutes.
“I just want to play aggressive knowing I’m going to make mistakes, just leave it all out there,” the Tennessee alumnus said.
