What Christian Gonzalez’s $135M extension means for the Eagles’ CB duo

The price of retaining Philadelphia’s elite cornerback duo continues to rise, and the Eagles should be paying close attention.

The New England Patriots have agreed to a four-year, $135 million extension with Christian Gonzalez, according to Ian Rapoport. The contract includes $102 million guaranteed, with both figures establishing NFL records for a cornerback. Gonzalez’s deal averages $33.75 million annually and surpasses the four-year, $132 million extension Devon Witherspoon recently signed with the Seattle Seahawks. Witherspoon received $101 million guaranteed.

Two record-setting agreements in less than a month have significant long-term implications for Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean.

Mitchell and DeJean were selected in the first and second rounds of the 2024 NFL draft, respectively. Neither is eligible to sign an extension until after the 2026 season, but Philadelphia could face two complicated negotiations as soon as next offseason. Mitchell has quickly developed into one of the NFL’s best outside cornerbacks. His speed, length, and ability to stay connected to receivers have allowed Vic Fangio to trust him against some of the league’s most dangerous targets.

Another Pro Bowl-caliber season could position Mitchell to challenge Gonzalez’s contract. Philadelphia has Mitchell’s fifth-year option available for 2028, providing additional control but not necessarily lowering his eventual asking price.

DeJean presents a different financial challenge.

The versatile defensive back operates primarily from the slot, but his value extends beyond traditional cornerback responsibilities. DeJean can cover receivers, defend the run, pressure quarterbacks, and create turnovers. He is also a dangerous punt returner. Because DeJean was a second-round pick, the Eagles do not have a fifth-year option attached to his rookie contract. He is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2027 season, giving Philadelphia more urgency to address his future.

Gonzalez earned his extension after three NFL seasons, following the same timeline Mitchell and DeJean are approaching. He also strengthened his value during New England’s 2025 playoff run, allowing four receptions for 32 yards on 10 fourth-quarter targets. He surrendered no touchdowns, intercepted one pass, and held opposing quarterbacks to a 9.2 passer rating, according to Next Gen Stats.

The Eagles don’t have to decide immediately, but the framework is becoming clear. If Mitchell and DeJean continue performing at an elite level, keeping the NFL’s best young cornerback tandem intact will require two enormous investments.
