Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has made the surprise suggestion that his old club could do well to sign Robert Lewandowski this summer.

The veteran Poland international is one of the finest forwards of his generation, and is set to leave Barcelona on a free transfer at the end of his contract.

Could Robert Lewandowski still do a job for Manchester United?

Lewandowski is undoubtedly one of the modern greats after a tremendous career at the highest level in Europe, with a total of 750 goals in 1,103 games for club and country.

However, he’ll be turning 38 in August and it’s hard to imagine he has that long left at the top level, with a move to a less competitive league now surely more likely for him.

It’s perfectly possible that Lewandowski could do well as a squad player for United, but he would surely struggle to now come in and start regularly in the Premier League, which is widely considered to be the most competitive in the world.

It will be interesting to see where Lewandowski ends up, and it obviously won’t be easy for Barcelona to replace him after some fine service in the last few years.

Although the 37-year-old only has 18 goals in 44 games this term, he managed a total of 119 in his four years at the Nou Camp, winning the La Liga title in three out of those four seasons.
